News - NJ Teen Hacks iPhone
We love it. George Hotz, a 17-year-old from New Jersey, has become the first person to unlock the Apple iPhone making its GSM technology compatible with a T-Mobile SIM card now as well as its AT&T plan. GSM is widely used in both Europe and Asia but less so in the US.
The project took about 500 hours of his summer since the iPhone came out but he feels it was worth it. He collaborated with several hackers in the US and Russia and used a soldering iron as well as code to unlock it.
AT&T and Apple had no comment and reportedly have not been in contact with Hotz.
According to Yahoo News, "On Thursday, he put the unlocked iPhone up for sale on eBay, where the high bid was at $12,600 late Friday. The model, with 4 gigabytes of memory, sells for $499 new."
Sweet. We love what a single person can do up against a two huge companies.
We're pro Apple but still, so cool.
