TV - "Bionic Woman" Premiere

With producers from Battlestar Gallactica and The X-Files, how can NBC's newest Sci Fi series fail?

We're pretty stoked about a new female superhero and what looks like it will be a really neat new show.

Q: What's at the heart of Jaime that made you want to play her? Do you want her to be all science or more of a human being with her pregnancy, her having to take care of her younger sister and the emotions of having to readjust to a new life?

Ryan: I think it is absolutely the human side... Yes, she has these super abilities, but at the core of it, there is a woman's journey of self discovery and her right to empowerment. I feel like I am on that journey. I just felt an instant connection. I know this young character (Vivian), who also has sudden abilities, she comes along farther down the series and Jaime takes her under her wing immediately. She is very compassionate and she questions every step of the way when Jonas and Antonio say, 'We are the good guys.' She questions everything. I love that. She is just this very grounded multi-layered character and person. That's why I felt, yeah, there is so much potential to play with her character, aside from the action sequences. The sci-fi element at the core of it is this human being who has got so much depth. That's the woman I want to be like. I want to find my voice and I want my voice to be strong and confident. I feel playing Jaime is helping me get there.

Check out the trailer above and read more of the cool interview with Michelle Ryan here.

The Bionic Woman premieres September 26th on NBC.

Questions - Captain America (2009)

Who do you think would be a good Captain America? Why?

We've been hearing strong rumors that it will be either "Two-Face" Aaron Eckhart (who we love) or Brad Pitt (who we also totally enjoy, and who hasn't ventured into the comic universe yet - Cool World doesn't count.)

We've also heard Val Kilmer, and non-Americans Hugh Jackman, Karl Urban, and Daniel Craig. We like all these guys but we admit to having a special fondness for Urban, a Kiwi who y'all may know from LOTR and who made frequent guest appearances on our favorite TV show back in the day, Xena: Warrior Princess.

We don't know if Hugh and Val should double dip though...it seems like one superhero per actor is a good idea. Plus, we've been digging when newcomers play the main characters like in Superman Returns.

PS. We're not quite sure but we're also hearing that it may be Torchwood star, gay British actor, John Barrowman.

PPS. As a strong supporter of gay rights, we we're pointing out the difference between Barrowman and the character, which is why we also mentioned that he was British. We mentioned the differing nationalities of the other actors rumored to be up for the role as well and have in other recent posts commented on the differences between comic book characters and the actors slated to play them (see race, haircolor, nationality.) Also, John Barrowman's sexual orientation has been made hugely public as of recently - specifically in relation to Captain America. Please keep comments relevant and educated or they will be deleted. Unlike other blogs, we don't cater to inapropriate or offensive comments just to get ratings.

PPPS. Has anyone ever seen Torchwood? While Barrowman is cute enough, the show boasts the worst plots/acting on television.

Guild Wars: "Eye of the North" Debuts

PC MMORPG giant Guild Wars is set to release Eye of the North, the fourth purchasable installment since its inception, on August 31st.

We were a World of Warcraft devotee since we own a Mac, but this video introducing the Scandinavian-esque 'Norn' looks pretty darn fun (We love Norse legends!) Not quite as well crafted as Warcraft -- and it's a little more cutesy -- but still fun.

The best part of Guild Wars -- no monthly subscription fees!

PS. Have you played Guild Wars? Will you buy the expansion? How is it rating on your scale? Let us know!

Geekdom - Johnny Depp Vs. Ewan McGregor: Vying for the Nerd Girl's $...Er, Heart

Nerd girls, geek girls, whatever you call them, they are a major marketing group for the classic actor-cum-franchise, most recently and notably the marginal-actors-turned-blockbuster-stars, Johnny Depp and Ewan McGregor.

Admittedly, both men worked hard to first come to notice in worthy and notable roles but what goes conveniently unnoted by fan girls with these guys, unlike with actors who cater to regular audiences, is the aftermath of bad acting.

After his standout role in Trainspotting, Ewan produced a fair number of stinkers: Brassed Off, The Pillow Book, Down With Love, Miss Potter, (add your own favorites here.) Johnny too has occasionally stunk. He came to fame with an inspired performance as the lead role in Edward Scissorhands but after becoming Tim Burton's call boy, his discriminating taste seems to have dulled. Remember his corny sexy gypsy stereotype in Chocolat? His corny sexy gypsy stereotype in Don Juan DeMarco? His corny sexy gypsy stereotype in The Man Who Cried??? There are others we won't mention that are less easily provable. (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Finding Neverland -- okay, we lied; we'll mention them.) Even his excellent performance as Captain Jack Sparrow in the recent super-trilogy Pirates of the Carribean was hampered by a third film that seemed to want to ride more on the coattails of Depp's unsinkable appeal rather than have its own well-developed plot.

They, unlike other actors, can do no wrong in the geek girl community because everything they do (good or bad, there is precious little discerning taste in hardcore geekdom) translates to box office gold and more cold hard cash. Their acclaim, while once hard won and well-proven, rests now on their fan base rather than any recent performances; they can stink freely without fear of critical retaliation.

PS. Do a YouTube search on these two. The sheer number of campy tribute videos painstakingly and heart-achingly amateurishly produced on cheap digital cameras by glasses-wearing, tin-lunch-box-carrying geek girls is astounding. There are even a few honoring both actors and (like our featured jewel) inter splice Johnny and Ewan clips to an appropriately geeky power ballad. We kid you not.
